ENGAGEMENT SHOOTS – DO YOU NEED ONE?
Short answer – nobody needs an engagement shoot. It’s a personal decision so don’t ever feel pressured into doing one if you don’t want to.
That being said, there are many pros to doing an engagement shoot which I talk about below. You also have the option to add one onto your package at a later date if you are unsure at the time of booking.
If you do decide to do an engagement shoot, you might then need help with timing, location and what to wear – that’s where this guide comes in!
WHY DO AN ENGAGEMENT SESSION?
WHY AN ENGAGEMENT SHOOT?
Not everyone has had a professional shoot with their partner or a professional shoot at all so it gives you both practice and a chance to get used to being in front of the camera together. You will get a chance to see how I work so you know what to expect on the big day!
If you need photos for ‘Save the Dates’ or wedding websites, the photos from the engagement shoot would be perfect for these.
Your engagement is an important time of your life, so why not document it?
NATURAL, URBAN, INDUSTRIAL, INDOOR
THE LOCATION CHOICE CAN DETERMINE THE OVERALL LOOK OF YOUR SESSION
If you like nature, you might want a session in the park. If you prefer an urban setting, you might choose a downtown location or a view of the city skyline. If you want an indoor location, you might want to rent an air bnb or do your session in a conservatory. Once you determine what look you are going for, I can help with location suggestions. Bear in mind that a lot of great locations do come at a price – photography permits are required in a lot of places but it’s usually worth it for photos that you are going to keep forever. Take a look at some of our Engagement galleries if you want some ideas.
TIME OF DAY
WHAT IS GOLDEN HOUR?
Provided that the weather is sunny, the best time to do your session is golden hour (the hour before the sun sets).
The light during this time of day is more flattering, creates less harsh shadows and will be more comfortable for you both as you avoid sweating too much in the summer and squinting in photos due to the bright sunlight.
In the summer, this means I typically hold sessions that start from around 6.00 pm to 7.00 pm, depending on the month. During the winter, we will do these sessions earlier during the day due to the sun setting early and the limited light.
WHAT IF IT RAINS?
If the weather predicts rain, we can still do the session but I will give you the option to reschedule with notice – your comfort is my priority.
Sessions in the snow are usually easier. Due to the cloud coverage, the lighting is good and usually means it’s ‘warmer’.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
DRESSED UP OR CASUAL?
REMEMBER THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION AND YOUR COMFORT ALWAYS COMES FIRST. DON’T WEAR ANYTHING YOU DON’T FEEL COMFORTABLE IN AND ULTIMATELY WHAT YOU WEAR IS YOUR CHOICE.
If you’re asking my honest and professional opinion, dress up! “But I still want to look like me.” I hear you – but hear me out. You are likely choosing formal outfits on your wedding day but your outfits will still be your choice and still very much “you.” You’re just choosing something a little bit more ‘extra’ than your daily attire, because it’s an important event in your life and you’re dressing up for the occasion.
Your engagement is also an important event in your life. You’re investing money into the session so we want it to look the best for you. Of course it won’t be as formal as your wedding day but we would recommend dressing up or going smart casual for this smaller occasion. I do recommend doing your trial for hair and make up on the day of engagement pictures! This will give you a good idea as to how the make up and hair will look in pictures!
